OUR STORY

A Continuing Timeline Journal About Dennis Dean

Welcome

This page is just beginning to unfold—like breath at the start of practice. For over two decades, Yoga Mandiram has stood as a living sanctuary, where thousands have students have stepped through its doors. It has been shaped by teachers, seekers, skeptics, and sages—each one contributing to a lineage rooted in presence, inquiry, and transformation. We are taking our time to tell this story with the depth and reverence it deserves, honoring every chapter and every voice that helped build this sacred space.

Though no longer open to the public, Yoga Mandiram continues to thrive as a private, by-appointment studio. We welcome sincere inquiries from those seeking a more personal and intentional space for practice, study, and community—guided by the enduring presence of Dennis Dean. The story isn’t over. It’s simply evolving, breath by breath.

This living journal is an ongoing timeline chronicling the life and path of Dennis Dean. Beginning with his early formative experiences in 1976, each entry corresponds to a specific year and is added weekly to offer a thoughtful, evolving portrait of his journey. From martial arts and alternative education to yoga, breathwork, global study, and teaching, these reflections trace a life dedicated to embodied wisdom, inner inquiry, and integrative healing. New entries are added every week as part of an ongoing effort to document and share the full scope of his personal and professional evolution.

1976

Dennis Dean begins his studies at the Institute for the Study of Attention (ISA), a private school in Encinitas, California, founded by Dr. Lester Ingber—a renowned theoretical physicist, scholar, and educator noted for his groundbreaking work in cognitive science, statistical mechanics, and neural modeling. ISA was an unconventional learning environment that merged intellectual rigor with physical and meditative disciplines.

During his time there, Dennis was introduced to foundational practices that would shape his life’s path. Under the guidance of Dr. Ingber, he explored concepts of focused attention, theoretical physics, and the neural basis of awareness. He also met two formative teachers: Kurt Rosi, who introduced him to the internal arts and meditative movement, and John Bryant, whose teachings brought clarity and depth to physical practice and philosophical inquiry.

It was here that Dennis first encountered Shotokan Karate and the Wu style of Tai Chi Chuan, both of which became anchors in his understanding of embodied presence. The convergence of martial arts, contemplative training, and scientific inquiry planted the seeds for a lifelong exploration into the nature of attention, energy, and transformation.
